A new coined phrase meaning discovery of our greener places here in the United States as well as around the world. As the popularity of travel spreads to the far corners of our country as well as aboard we realize that it is really a small world. Within the last five years a new industry called eco-tourism has developed as more travelers wish to see our planet's natural and cultural treasures. Along with this growing trend comes the responsibility of preserving our environment and realizing that we must take care to follow some guidelines and make decisions that have a positive effect on the world around us.
So this month we start out with some tips for the eco-tourist taking a pledge that our enthusiasm won't rob our grandchildren from feeling the same sense of the joy of exploration because we carelessly ruin it all.
- Simplify - simple solutions make for major improvements.
- Keep your group under control. The whole organization doesn't have to embark together. Why? Smaller groups, less food, less garbage, smaller fires and campsites and less crowds overrunning the popular areas.
- Whether its eco-tourism or just touring historic sits, Smokey the Bear might be yesterday's hero but his slogan "DON'T LITTER" is as up to date as the minute you read this sentence.
- Don't rearrange natures "garden" by leaving rocks in place, do not cut down trees for your campfire with the attitude of "it will grow back" and remember the word "respect". Just think if one million people walked through your backyard and took just one small thing home for a souvenir!?
- Consider everywhere you visit a special place and take the time to know the customs, cultural differences, local heritage and take responsibility for your actions. Children learn respect from adults and remember what goes around comes around. Even if we don't speak the language or understand the customs, a smile is universal.
- One of the easiest actions to take when traveling is to support responsible tour operators, hotels, restaurants and guides that contribute to conservation and preservation by the way they run their companies with the understanding that they don't have to destroy in order to flourish.
